North Texas gets a lot of weather, and Texas leads the country in billion-dollar disaster events by a wide margin according to NOAA's state summary. Frisco sits in the part of the metroplex where hail claims cluster. None of that is avoidable. How much damage it does to your particular roof largely is.
Start With An Honest Inspection
Twice a year is the sensible rhythm: once before storm season and once after. What you are looking for is not dramatic damage, it is the small stuff that a storm turns into a claim.
- Lifted or missing shingles, particularly along ridges and edges
- Flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights, which is where most leaks start
- Plumbing boots, which go brittle in the sun and split
- Granules collecting in the gutters, which tells you the shingle is shedding
Fix The Details, Not The Field
Roofs almost never fail in the middle of a slope. They fail at the joins. If you only do one thing before storm season, have the flashing and the boots checked and repaired. That is a small job that prevents the large one.
Clear The Gutters
A blocked gutter in a heavy Texas downpour backs water up under the bottom course of shingles. It is one of the more common ways an intact roof still lets water in.
Deal With The Trees
Overhanging branches do two things in a storm: they scour granules off the shingle as they move, and they come down. Trim anything within six to ten feet of the roofline.
Photograph It Now
This is the step people skip and later wish they had not. A dated set of photographs of your roof in good condition is the strongest evidence you can have that damage was caused by a specific storm and was not pre-existing wear. Adjusters take that distinction seriously, because policies do.
We photograph the whole roof on every inspection and give you the file whether you hire us or not, which means you have that record without having to climb anything.
Know What You Are Covered For
Sudden storm damage is normally covered. Age, wear and deferred maintenance are not. Check your deductible before you need it, particularly whether wind and hail carry a separate percentage deductible rather than a flat figure, because on a five-figure roof that difference matters.
After The Storm
Do not climb up. Look from the ground, photograph what you can see, and get it inspected properly. Hail damage frequently does not leak straight away, which is exactly why it gets missed until the claim window has closed.
If the roof is open, we tarp it, usually the same day. See storm damage repair in Frisco, or read the most common roofing mistakes we are called out to fix.
What A Pre-Season Inspection Should Cover
Ask for these specifically, because a walk-over that produces a verbal all-clear is worth very little:
- Photographs of every elevation, not just the one facing the street
- Every penetration checked individually: pipe boots, vents, satellite mounts, solar standoffs
- Flashing at chimneys, walls, valleys and skylights
- Ridge and hip caps, which lift first in wind
- The attic, with a torch, looking for daylight, damp and packed-down insulation
- Ventilation assessed against the size of the attic rather than assumed from what is already there
The Ventilation Point, Because It Decides The Rest
An attic that runs hot and damp cooks the underside of the deck and shortens the life of whatever is on top of it. Intake at the eaves has to be matched by exhaust at the ridge, and the most common fault we find in Frisco is insulation pushed into the soffit vents during an energy upgrade, which closes the intake completely.
Storm season is not the cause of that failure, but a roof already weakened from underneath is the one that loses shingles when the wind arrives.
If A Replacement Is Already Due
Doing it before the season rather than after is worth more than most people assume. You choose the material rather than accepting what is in stock during a post-storm rush, you get a crew who is not working through a backlog, and you start the season with a roof that has a documented condition and a live warranty.
If you are replacing anyway, price a Class 4 impact-rated shingle and ask your insurer what discount it carries on the wind and hail portion of the premium. That discount recurs every year and is rarely mentioned unless you ask for it.
Not Sure What Your Roof Needs?
We will come out, photograph the whole roof and tell you plainly what it needs, whether that is a repair, a replacement or nothing at all. Free, and with nothing riding on it.
