Plenty of Plano roofs were originally specified with three-tab shingle, which is thinner, flatter and the first thing to lift in wind. Moving to architectural, and to Class 4 impact-rated where the budget allows, is the single largest improvement available on a like-for-like replacement here.
Shingle Roofing Across Plano
A large share of Plano housing went up in a concentrated period, which means whole streets tend to reach roof replacement age at roughly the same time. If neighbours are having roofs done, that is usually why. The other Plano pattern we see is second-generation roofs installed over the original decking during the last replacement cycle, which has to come off properly this time rather than being covered again.
Why Shingle Still Wins Here
Architectural asphalt shingle gives the best cost-to-protection ratio in North Texas, installs quickly, and can be matched slope by slope when a storm takes out one elevation rather than the whole roof.
Three-Tab Versus Architectural
Three-tab is thinner, flatter and cheaper, and it is the first thing to lift in high wind. Architectural is layered, heavier and rated for higher wind speeds. On a hail-exposed roof the difference shows up within a few seasons.
Impact Rating Is Worth The Money
Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is tested against steel-ball impact and holds up to hail markedly better than a standard product. Many carriers discount the premium for it, which shortens the payback considerably.
Installation Decides The Lifespan
Nail placement, starter course, valley detail and correct ventilation matter more to how long a shingle roof lasts than the brand on the wrapper. Most premature failures we are called to are installation, not material.
