Metal vs Shingle: Which Is Best For Dallas Homes?

The honest answer depends on one thing more than any other: how long you intend to own the house. Everything else follows from that.

This comes up on most replacement quotes we write, and the sales version of the answer is not useful. Here is the comparison with the trade-offs left in.

Lifespan

Metal runs 40 to 70 years. Asphalt shingle runs 15 to 30, and in this climate the lower half of that range is more common than the upper. Heat from above and an under-ventilated attic from below age asphalt from both sides at once.

Metal wins, by roughly a factor of two.

Cost

Installed, metal is around $8 to $16 per square foot. Asphalt is $3.50 to $7.50. On a typical Dallas house that is a real difference, and it is the reason most roofs here are asphalt.

Shingle wins on day one. Over thirty years, with one asphalt replacement in the middle, the gap narrows or closes depending on what happens with hail.

Heat

A reflective metal roof sends a large share of solar gain back off the house instead of into the attic. The Cool Roof Rating Council publishes the ratings if you want to compare specific products. Lighter asphalt helps, but it cannot match a reflective metal finish.

Metal wins, and in a Dallas summer that shows on the bill.

Hail

This is the one people get wrong in both directions. Metal is Class 4 impact rated and rated for wind up to around 140 mph. It will still dent. A hailstone that would end an asphalt roof leaves a metal panel marked but functional.

So: metal keeps working, and may look worse. Asphalt looks fine until it does not, then leaks. Which of those you mind more is a genuine preference, not a technical answer.

Either way, the Texas Department of Insurance lists carriers offering discounts for impact-resistant roofing, which applies to Class 4 asphalt as well as metal.

Noise

The most persistent myth. Rain noise is a function of what is under the panel. Over solid decking with underlayment and attic insulation, a metal roof is not appreciably louder than shingle. The noise people remember is from panels over open framing, on a barn or a porch.

Appearance And Resale

Standing seam reads as deliberate on modern architecture and can look out of place on a traditional street. Metal shingle solves that, giving metal performance in a profile that reads as shingle or tile. Some HOAs have views on this, which is worth checking before you fall in love with a sample.

Environmental

Metal is commonly made partly from recycled material and is recyclable at end of life. Asphalt shingle is petroleum-based, difficult to recycle, and mostly landfilled.

So Which One

  • Staying under ten years: architectural asphalt, Class 4 if the budget allows.
  • Staying long term: metal, and stop replacing roofs.
  • Claimed for hail more than once: impact-rated, whichever material you choose.
  • Appearance is the constraint: metal shingle, or composite.
