What Is Flat Panel Metal Roofing?
Flat panel metal is a family of systems using wide, flat sheets rather than the profiled corrugated panels most people picture. The two we fit most are flat lock, where panels interlock on all four edges, and standing seam, where the joins are raised and the fasteners are hidden inside them.
The Metals
- Steel — coated galvanised or Galvalume. The workhorse, and the best value per square.
- Aluminium — lighter and naturally corrosion resistant, which matters on exposed sites.
- Copper — extremely long-lived and it patinas. A design choice as much as a roofing one.
- Zinc — comparable longevity to copper with a more muted finish, and it self-heals minor scratches.
How Commercial Metal Differs From Residential
The same material behaves differently at scale, and this is where inexperienced installers get caught out. Commercial roofs run at lower slopes, over much longer panel spans, which makes thermal movement a real design factor rather than a footnote. Panels get thicker gauge, seams get sealed differently, and inspection is more frequent. Work is also under OSHA requirements on a commercial site.
Thermal Movement Is The Detail That Matters
A long metal panel expands and contracts measurably between a January night and an August afternoon in Texas. Systems have to be clipped so panels can move; fix them rigidly and the roof will oil-can, fatigue the fasteners, or open a seam. On long spans this is the single most important installation detail.
Benefits Of Commercial Metal Roofing
Forty to seventy years of service life. Hail and high-wind resistance that no membrane matches. Non-combustible, with genuine fire-rating advantages. Reflective finishes that cut cooling load significantly on a large roof. Lightweight relative to its lifespan, and fully recyclable at end of life.
Residential Flat Panel
On modern and contemporary houses, standing seam gives clean sightlines nothing else reproduces. For profiled and shingle-look metal options, see metal roofing. For commercial systems generally, see commercial roofing.
